1864 brings to the big screen one of the most popular Danish television series ever made, in a newly released theatrical cut. Writer-director Ole Bornedal wrote the scripts for both the miniseries and the movie, purposefully shooting certain scenes exclusively for the film during filming of the series resulting in two uniquely tailored productions of the same historical drama.

Boasting an all-star cast including Søren Malling (The Man, Scandi FF 2017), Jakob Oftebro (Scandi FF 2016 Special Guest), and Lars Mikkelsen (The Killing), it chronicles the Second Schleswig War through the eyes of two brothers. Captured in both intimate and epic form, this breathtaking historical masterpiece follows the inseparable young brothers Peter and Laust, as they and their childhood friend Inge (Marie Tourell Søderberg) grow up in what seems to be an endless Danish summer, to young adulthood when the brothers fall in love with her. All the while, backstage political games are played by the nation’s hubristic leaders as we draw ever nearer to the fateful battle. A classic story about power and its abuses and a riveting and untapped perspective on history.

As compelling as any Nordic noir.
