Festival Guest Charlotte Sieling

Charlotte Sieling

Charlotte Sieling (1960, Denmark) is an award-winning actress and filmmaker. She studied acting at the National Theatre School of Denmark, where she graduated in 1985. She won Best Actress in 1995 at the Danish Bodil Awards for her role in Love Me, Love Me Not. In 2000, she turned to filmmaking and worked on multiple successful TV series, including Unit One (2000) starring Mads Mikkelsen and The Killing (2007). She was the conceptual director on the first four episodes of the Danish/Swedish crime series The Bridge, for which she received great reviews and caught the attention of international audiences, including a nomination in London for the BAFTA TV Award for Best International Series. Her direction on the first two episodes of Borgen season 3 earned her the Robert Award for Best Danish TV series in 2014. Her feature-film debut came with Above the Street, Below the Water in 2009, which starred Borgen’s Sidse Babett Knudsen and The Killing’s Nicolas Bro – both of whom appear in 1864 in this year’s festival.

We are delighted to be hosting the Australian premiere of her second feature film The Man, which follows a father-son rivalry set amid Copenhagen’s trendy arts scene. A world of which Sieling is intimately familiar, having grown up in an artistic family herself. The film premiered to acclaim at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, was a personal favourite of Göteborg Film Festival Artistic Director Jonas Holmgren and was nominated in the New Directors competition at Seattle International Film Festival. The film boasts an all star line-up including Søren Malling (Borgen, Parents), Jakob Oftebro (Gold Coast, 1864), Ane Dahl Torp (The Wave) and Søren Pilmark (A Conspiracy of Faith).
